aerynOS Adds Budgie 10.10.3 for Testing, Updates COSMIC to 1.9

The aerynOS October update brings Budgie 10.10.3, COSMIC 1.9.0, Linux kernel 7.2.8, Qt 6.12, OpenSSL 4.0.3, and new system tools.

aerynOS has rolled out a sizable October update to its unstable stream, refreshing much of the system stack with COSMIC Desktop 1.9, GNOME 51, Linux kernel 7.2.8, Qt 6.12, and OpenSSL 4.0.3.

A couple of days later, the distro added another notable change: Budgie 10.10.3 is now available in the volatile stream for testing.

However, keep in mind that the Budgie addition is still in the testing phase. The aerynOS team announced that Budgie 10.10.3 and its required dependencies have made it into the volatile stream, giving users an early chance to try the desktop on the distro.

On the system side, aerynOS has added two packages: fwupd 2.1.8 for firmware updates and firewalld 2.5.2 for firewall management. Another major part of the update is the move to Qt 6.12.

The cryptography stack has been upgraded from the OpenSSL 3.6 series to OpenSSL 4.0.3. Kernel packages have also moved forward. Both the gaming and stable kernel variants now use Linux 7.2.8, while the LTS option has been updated to Linux 6.18.54.

Graphics users get Mesa 26.2.4, while the application side includes Firefox 157 and Thunderbird 157.0.1.

Other updated components include PipeWire 1.6.9, WirePlumber 0.5.18, Flatpak 1.18.4, QEMU 11.1.2, Podman 6.1.3, Wine 11.19, Gamescope 3.16.29, qBittorrent 5.2.4, and WebKitGTK 2.54.

The update also adds several new packages to the repositories, including the Epiphany web browser, Halloy 2026.8 IRC client, Supersonic 0.22.1 for connecting to self-hosted music servers, plus Vulkan validation layers and utility libraries.

Finally, be aware that the project still considers the distribution alpha quality and says it is not yet intended as a daily driver for the average user.
