Fwupd 2.1.8 is now available as the latest update to the Linux firmware update utility, adding support for more hardware and a broad set of fixes to improve firmware installation, recovery, and device handling.
Among the new features, the release introduces a plugin that notifies bootupd when the EFI System Partition changes. It also adds RSA-3072 signature verification support for Lenovo accessories, strengthening validation for supported firmware packages.
On the bug fixes side, fwupd 2.1.8 resolves a buffer overwrite when parsing Synaptics CAPE HID reports, a crash affecting Dell docks when malformed device information is returned, a memory leak while parsing invalid TPM event logs, and a NULL pointer issue when enumerating broken Synaptics RMI devices.
The release also improves firmware recovery for Logitech Unifying devices and fixes an error that could occur when installing the latest DBX through snapd. Other changes include improved eMMC error recovery, a stricter PolicyKit action when a device disappears, validation of jcat item IDs before use as filenames, and a 2 GiB limit for LZMA stream decompression.
Moreover, Redfish firmware blobs of up to 512 MiB are now supported, the Huddly USB bulk-write timeout has been increased to 30 seconds, and the Wacom descriptor cache is invalidated when the block count changes. Fwupd can also now handle BIOS enumeration settings represented as either strings or integers.
On the hardware side, fwupd 2.1.8 adds support for the ASUS GX5407, Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Dock Gen 2 7000, FocalTech MOC fingerprint sensors, MaxLinear MxL862xx devices, MediaTek MT9700 FCTE and MT9701 KSMU hardware, Elan PID 0CB6, several PixArt devices, and the Rolling RW101.
