Bottles, a graphical tool for managing Wine environments that lets users create isolated “bottles” for Windows software with separate runners, dependencies, settings, and launch options, has released version 66.
The main new feature is UMU integration – a unified launcher that lets you use Proton outside of Steam. Now, when you launch through UMU, Bottles uses ProtoSoda by default, making Bottles even better for gaming and giving you another way to run Windows apps with Proton.
Another important update is Adaptive Launch support for Soda. With Soda 11.0-5 or newer, Bottles can now adjust how it launches apps when using the runner, instead of always using the same method.
Moreover, Bottles 66 makes it easier to update runners and components. Official runner logos now appear in the interface and in each bottle’s details, so you can identify different environments more easily.
This release also brings an experimental official cpak package, built directly from the Bottles sources. Along with it, there are changes like support for independent cpak instances, runtime recognition, application flag handling, and other fixes needed for the first cpak integration.
On the bug-fix side, Bottles 66 addresses NVK detection when running as a Flatpak, adds support for SOCKS proxies, and updates the libvkd3d-utils dependency for Proton 11. The Flatpak add-on installation commands have been corrected as well.
Additional fixes include keeping program icons independent of the library, opening the cover picker in the Pictures directory, restoring dependency actions, reusing the default Bottles directory where appropriate, and ensuring host wrappers are run outside the Steam Runtime.
Finally, the onboarding process can now also start without requiring a Wine runner to already be available.
