GNOME contributor Brage Fuglseth announced that Bazaar, the modern Flatpak-focused app store built for the GNOME desktop, has officially joined GNOME Circle, an initiative that brings independently developed apps and libraries that follow GNOME’s platform and design principles into the wider GNOME ecosystem, with access to project infrastructure and promotion.
If you haven’t heard of it, Bazaar calls itself a “new app store for GNOME” with a focus on helping users find and install applications and add-ons from Flatpak remotes, especially Flathub. It also includes a curated section that Linux distributions can customize to suit their needs.
Beyond being accepted into GNOME Circles, what matters more is that the move comes as Bazaar is being discussed in connection with the upcoming GNOME 52, scheduled for release in spring 2027, and longer-term plans to rethink the role currently filled by GNOME Software.
Importantly, this doesn’t mean Bazaar will take over everything GNOME Software does. GNOME Software handles much more than Flatpak, depending on the distribution and backends. It can manage native packages, system updates, firmware, and other tasks. Bazaar is focused only on Flatpak apps.
Instead, the plan seems to be splitting up these responsibilities. For GNOME OS, system updates are expected to move into GNOME Settings instead of Bazaar. What other distributions decide to do is still up in the air, especially for those that use GNOME Software for package and firmware management.
Of course, this doesn’t mean GNOME Software will go away with GNOME 52, and there’s no official word yet that Bazaar will be the default app store. What we do know is that Bazaar is aiming for GNOME 52; its developers see it as an app store for GNOME, and joining GNOME Circle brings it closer to the center of the GNOME app ecosystem.
Right now, you can install Bazaar from Flathub. There are also Debian and Arch Linux packages, but the developers note that these native packages aren’t directly supported. The app’s official website is here.
It does not open on my ubuntu 24.04. I uninstalled bazaar with warehouse app that no longer removes left over data or fails so I have to manually do it not sure why maybe a permission issue but it use to work.
I have avoided gnome software for years since i hate it. I have a bookmark for flathub and use there copy paste install method. I also do not auto update since I just type flatpak update once a week.
Even changing permissions with flatseal does not help. At least when you go to leftover data you can click on details and see location in warehouse.
