The GNOME Project has announced GNOME 51.1, the first maintenance update to the GNOME 51 desktop environment. One main change is in Mutter, GNOME’s window manager and Wayland compositor, which fixes drag-and-drop issues between native Wayland and Xwayland applications.
The update also corrects window assignments to monitors after configuration changes, fixes workspace behavior when displays are rearranged, and improves frame-clock throttling during power saving.
GNOME Shell 51.1 includes several fixes. These correct the clock position on the lock screen, fix workspace thumbnail alignment in right-to-left layouts, and address an issue where Quick Settings could prevent direct scanout. The release also fixes grayscale color filters, improves web login and banner layouts, and resolves memory leaks.
Nautilus 51.1, GNOME’s default file manager, fixes issues with reusing tabs when opening locations from the shell, setting custom file icons, and displaying file permission indicators. The Properties dialog also receives corrections, including better thumbnail handling and a fix for windows sometimes opening too small.
Regarding security, GNOME Web 51.1 addresses CVE-2026-94291, a vulnerability involving insecure iframe handling through internal browser schemes.
In addition, Libsoup 3.8 fixes two vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-3099 and CVE-2026-66337, related to HTTP Digest authentication and out-of-bounds reads during multipart processing. It also adds protections against HTTP request smuggling and improves proxy credential handling.
GTK 4.24.1 resolves issues with on-screen keyboard activation, text input handling, SVG parsing, and text selection handles. GLib 2.90.1 also includes fixes for buffer handling, Unicode normalization, regular expressions, and file monitoring.
On top of that, GNOME Settings 51.1 brings some smaller corrections, including fixes for the accessibility text-size slider, keyboard modifier settings, mobile network configuration dialogs, and printer supply indicators.
Other updated components include GNOME System Monitor 51.1, which fixes a crash on systems without libselinux, and GNOME Maps 51.2, which resolves rendering issues affecting public transit itineraries and map layers. Orca, GNOME’s screen reader, also receives accessibility improvements.

GNOME 51.1 will reach users through their Linux distributions’ repositories as maintainers package and distribute the updated components. The GNOME 51 series is expected to receive five more maintenance updates, up to version 51.6, while the next major release, GNOME 52, is scheduled for March 2027.
