The Nitrux team has announced Nitrux 6.0, an immutable, systemd-free Debian-based Linux distribution that uses AppImage-based software delivery and includes Hyprland as the default desktop environment.
This update introduces Linux kernel 6.19, built with CachyOS performance patches. Major components of the graphics and desktop stack have also been updated, including Hyprland 0.53.3 and its companion tools: Hyprlock, Hyprpaper, Hypridle, and Hyprsysteminfo.
Additional updates include Mesa 25.3.3, Flatpak 1.16.2, Python 3.13.9, NetworkManager 1.54.3, WirePlumber 0.5.13, Calamares 3.3.14, and Distrobox 1.8.2. NVIDIA users will receive the updated 590.48.01 graphics driver.
The release also introduces several new Wayland-native components developed specifically for Nitrux. QMLGreet, a new login manager built with C++ and MauiKit, replaces QtGreet and integrates with greetd and wlroots-based compositors.
NudgeOSD, a QML-based on-screen display, has also been added to provide notifications and keyboard shortcut feedback in Wayland environments.
Another key addition in Nitrux 6.0 is VxM, a hypervisor orchestration utility designed for high-performance virtualization developed by the Nitrux team. It enables virtual machines to achieve near-native performance by using technologies such as VFIO PCI passthrough and IOMMU isolation, which allow guest operating systems direct access to dedicated hardware, including GPUs.
On top of that, the new Rescue Mode is integrated into the boot process, allowing users to restore the system from existing snapshots without external recovery media. The boot configuration is automatically rebuilt after restoration.
Desktop configuration has been refined with updates to Hyprland rules and animations, improvements to Waybar styling and fonts, and changes to SwayNC and Hyprlock configurations. System optimizations include adjustments to NVMe power management to reduce boot delays and enhancements to initramfs handling.
Finally, this release removes several legacy components. QtGreet and the shell-based implementation of the Nitrux Update Tool System have been retired, along with the NetworkManager ifupdown dispatch script.
For additional details, refer to the official announcement.
Nitrux 6.0.0 is available for download in two ISO variants: one for NVIDIA GPUs and another for systems with AMD or Intel graphics. The developers recommend a fresh installation using the latest media, although users running Nitrux 5.1 can upgrade using the update tool.
