Bottles, a graphical Wine prefix manager for running and managing Windows software on Linux through isolated “bottles” with their own runners, dependencies, settings, and launch options, has released version 67.1.
One main change is an improved Adaptive Launch feature that remembers what a program needs between launches and prepares those files before Wine requests them.
The feature is available with Soda 11.0-7 and can be enabled from Bottle Preferences > Performance > Adaptive Launch. Bottles builds the profile during the first launches, and existing profiles update automatically.
According to the project’s release measurements, median cold-start time improved by 3.38%, and median major page faults dropped from 16 to 1. Actual gains vary depending on the application and hardware.
ProtoSoda 11.0-2 also brings Adaptive Launch to UMU games. New installations get the functionality automatically, while existing setups must update ProtoSoda and select protosoda-11.0-2 in the game settings.
Another useful change is that the first UMU launch can now download Steam Runtime 4 automatically when missing, removing the need to rely on another launcher to prepare the runtime beforehand.
Bottles 67.1 also improves VR support. Soda 11.0-7 can connect 64-bit Windows OpenXR applications directly to a Linux OpenXR runtime like WiVRn or Monado without requiring SteamVR. There is no separate Bottles option to enable; users just select Soda and launch the application.
Moreover, runner updates have become safer. Updating Soda no longer resets an existing bottle’s Windows user profile to steamuser. The current Windows profile stays active, so saves, settings, and other profile-specific data remain in their expected locations without migration.
The release also includes several smaller usability fixes. The global “+” button now lets users choose between creating a new bottle or installing a game with UMU, while library entries keep their sorting and disappear immediately after removal.
Additionally, opening the settings of a running application no longer changes its synchronization mode automatically, preventing programs from being unexpectedly terminated.
Finally, sandboxed UMU games now start without network access by default. Network connectivity can be restored by enabling Share Network in the game settings when online services are required.
