Fooyin 0.12 has been released as the latest update to this customizable Qt-based Linux music player. The new feature is audio conversion, which enables users to convert tracks straight from fooyin into various commonly used audio formats.
Another major feature of the release concerns visualizations. Version 0.12 includes new Spectrogram and Oscilloscope plugins, together with a projectM plugin which provides support for the well-known MilkDrop-style visual effects.
This update also includes a PulseAudio output plugin, since even though many modern Linux distributions have adopted PipeWire, compatibility with PulseAudio remains useful for existing installations and configurations.
Playback has received an optional automatic resampling feature intended for cases where the audio device does not support the sample rate of the file currently being played. If this feature is enabled, Fooyin will automatically resample the audio rather than depending on the device to deal with the unsupported rate.
There are also a number of performance improvements. Folder loading in the Directory Browser is now faster because recursive playlist discovery is delayed, and the Properties dialog has been improved as well. Plus, the Tag Editor now populates its contents asynchronously.
Moreover, Fooyin now recalls the last directory that was used when importing or exporting playlists; the update also includes independent override options for the configurable interface colors and fonts, giving users more control over their custom layouts.
The visualization improvements also include more frame-rate presets and more natural decay behavior for spectrum bands and peaks when playback is paused or stopped.
The Radio Browser component has been improved by hiding countries in the Radio Guide by default and showing errors in a dismissible banner. FooScript, fooyin’s scripting and formatting system, also has a new $crc32 function.
Apart from these changes, the Fooyin 0.12 music player includes many fixes for playlists, metadata, playback, tagging, remote streams, scrobbling, and the interface. Among these is a remedy for a crash that might occur when removing the last empty default playlist.
Several issues relating to the rendering on displays with fractional scaling have also been solved. These involved the correct rendering of icons, star ratings, the edge fades of lyrics, the playlist playback indicators, and the heights of spectrum peaks.
Metadata handling is now more reliable as a result of the repairs made to the incorrect labeling of legacy encodings in ID3 tags, and searches that are insensitive to accents have also been fixed so as to match the start of words better.
In other cases, the Tag Editor will no longer duplicate extended tags when they are renamed, and a separate repair makes it possible to rename existing extended tags correctly. Finally, autoplaylists are now set to keep their individual entries and stable identities when they are regenerated.
