GNOME 49.10 is now available as the final maintenance release in the GNOME 49 desktop series, bringing another round of bug fixes and stability improvements before the branch reaches the end of its upstream support cycle.
According to the official release schedule, GNOME 49.10 is marked as EOL and the “Last release” for the series. GNOME 51 is now the current stable generation, while GNOME 50 continues as the old-stable branch.
In GNOME 49.10, 14 components receive new versions, including GNOME Shell 49.10, Mutter 49.8, Epiphany 49.9.1, GNOME Maps 49.7, GVfs 1.58.5, libadwaita 1.8.8, libsecret 0.21.8.2, Papers 49.8, and Yelp 49.2.
GNOME Shell gets fixes for glitches when switching workspaces while direct scanout is active and an issue that could appear when cancelling the lock-screen prompt with the Esc key. Thunderbolt device authorization has also been fixed. The magnifier can now track the mouse position without relying on polling.
Mount password dialogs are canceled when the screen is locked. Serialized image data is validated before creating a pixbuf. Developers have also addressed a crash, several memory leaks, and smaller bugs.
Mutter, GNOME’s window and compositing manager, also receives a sizable collection of fixes. These include blurred rendering on monitors that are not pixel-aligned, invalid redraw regions on rotated displays, and a problem where multiple monitors were incorrectly reported as the primary display.
Direct scanout handling has been improved for captures without dma-buf support. Cross-GPU buffer scanout is now handled correctly. Other fixes cover key-repeat behavior, software cursor visibility, fallback resolutions, crashes, and numerous memory leaks.
There are a few security-related changes as well. GVfs 1.58.5 addresses CVE-2026-88924 in its admin backend by ensuring socket ownership is set before creation. Epiphany 49.9.1, GNOME’s web browser, meanwhile includes fixes for an autofill JavaScript code injection issue and a WebExtension XPI ZIP path traversal vulnerability.
On top of that, libsecret improves thread safety and locking for its file backend and addresses several memory leaks. Libgsf fixes multiple OLE2 edge cases and leaks, improves thread safety, and strengthens handling of corrupted ZIP streams.
GNOME Maps fixes several smaller routing and display issues, while libadwaita receives corrections affecting animations, action rows, and tab handling. The update also includes maintenance releases for accessibility components, certificate and cryptography libraries, documentation, and the Papers document viewer.

As usual, the update will reach users through the repositories of distributions that continue to maintain GNOME 49. For everyone else, development and maintenance have already moved on to the GNOME 50 and GNOME 51 branches.
