OpenShot 4.0.1 Video Editor Improves Razor Tool, Timeline Editing, and Linux Support

OpenShot 4.0.1 upgrades the Razor tool, improves timeline navigation and editing responsiveness, adds official Snap support, and fixes numerous bugs.

OpenShot, the free and open-source video editor for Linux, Windows, and macOS, has released version 4.0.1, with an upgraded Razor tool. It now shows source-frame previews while cutting, supports snapping, highlights the section to be removed, and introduces ripple cuts that close the gap on the same track automatically.

Timeline navigation has also improved. Clip titles and effect controls stay visible more consistently while scrolling, the zoom slider has clearer, easier-to-grab handles, and thumbnails behave more reliably when zooming or resizing the timeline. OpenShot also fixed thumbnail timing drift across zoom levels.

Regarding editing responsiveness, color and keyframe editing now feel faster, trim previews respond more quickly, and live transform adjustments are smoother. Several fixes address undo and redo history, stale editor states, preview refresh issues, project saving, export failures, and asset relocation.

Linux users get notable changes too. OpenShot 4.0.1 adds official Snap support with automatic updates and desktop menu integration. Native Linux webcam discovery is now available for recording, and Linux packages include an optional Wayland capture module.

The release also restores native file dialogs, with better support for desktop portals and starting folders on newer Linux distributions. Workflows with external apps like Inkscape and Blender have been refined, including improved handling when these editors are installed as Snaps.

OpenShot 4.0.1 fixes startup failures on macOS systems missing expected library dependencies, especially on machines without Homebrew. Windows users get improved handling of recording files locked by another process.

Finally, the update introduces less intrusive notification banners. Dismissed update notices stay hidden until the next release, and feedback and announcement banners interfere less with editing.
