The still-in-development immutable KDE Linux can now automatically install the software required to launch Java and DOS applications, but, more importantly, the official announcement states that KDE Linux has completed 83% of the work tracked for its Beta milestone.
The new functionality comes from a major improvement to KDE Linux’s Package Compatibility Helper. When users try to open a file no installed application can handle, the tool offers to download suitable software from Flathub after explicit approval.
For Java applications, KDE Linux offers to install a Java Runtime Environment the first time one is launched. Once downloaded, the system immediately uses it to start the application. DOS executables receive similar treatment, with the compatibility helper offering DOSBox as the required environment.
According to KDE, the mechanism was designed to be extensible, so support for additional file and application formats can be added later. Its implementation is generic enough to potentially benefit other image-based Linux operating systems that rely on Flatpak.
On the security and performance fronts, KDE Linux adopted several kernel hardening adjustments inspired by the SecureBlue project, limited to changes that should not inconvenience users. In addition, developers removed hardware watchdog kernel modules unnecessary on desktop systems, slightly reducing CPU usage and improving boot times.
Moreover, the CUPS printing service now uses socket activation, allowing its components to remain inactive until they are actually needed. Other changes include out-of-the-box support for WWAN modems and the restoration of the esp4 and esp6 kernel modules, which were previously removed as a protection against the DirtyFrag vulnerability.
Lastly, it’s also worth noting that KDE Linux now pre-installs vulkan-virtio, which should improve graphical performance in virtual machines with virtual GPU drivers that support Vulkan. The project also fixed Flatpak synchronization between existing installations and new system images, along with a USB autosuspend script that previously failed with input devices lacking a product name.
