The popular open-source audio editing software Audacity has just released version 3.7.2, offering a series of fixes and quality-of-life improvements. To start, issues that caused crashes when applying effects across multiple tracks—especially if one track happened to be empty—have finally been resolved.
Likewise, the pesky glitches emanating from the Mixer window should no longer hinder a smooth editing session. Moreover, for those who missed the “Residue” option in noise reduction, it has now been restored.
An intriguing new development is that modules will stick around when incremental updates, such as this 3.7.x series, go live. In other words, users can rest assured that they will not need to reinstall crucial components like OpenVINO with every minor patch.
Also, when adding a real-time effect to a track, the effect settings now appear automatically. This handy change eliminates an extra click or two so you can quickly fine-tune your effect parameters.

Further improving the user experience, Audacity has introduced an informative warning box that appears whenever saving a project in a newer version will disrupt compatibility with older builds. Meanwhile, in response to user feedback, the team also added a preference to turn off the automatic tempo detection.
On the subject of duplicating tracks, each new duplicate now has independent real-time effect instances. Additionally, various fixes address confusing selection behaviors and pasting issues, ensuring that range-selection and clip navigation behave more predictably.
Cloud storage enthusiasts will appreciate the several improvements to cloud saving. These aim to boost stability and confidence when syncing or backing up projects online. Mac users should be glad to hear that AUSoundIsolation is back on track, and Linux users—especially those on Ubuntu 22.04—can expect smooth sailing thanks to the fixed FFmpeg loading in the AppImage.
Finally, for those who like to personalize their work environment, color mismatches in dark themes have been resolved, while track drawing behavior at high zoom levels is now more accurate. Audacity also added a new “Get Effects” button next to “Upload Audio,” which should be handy for quickly discovering and managing plug-ins.
