Audacity 3.7.9 is now available as the latest maintenance update to the popular open-source audio editor, adding FFmpeg 9 support and important fixes to prevent project corruption and data loss.
According to the release notes, the new version addresses several situations where users could lose work. These include running out of disk space, disconnecting a drive right after closing a project, and closing a recovered project without saving it first.
The release also adds support for FFmpeg 9, keeping Audacity compatible with newer versions of the widely used multimedia framework.
Windows users get another improvement as ASIO support is now enabled in the official Windows builds. Audacity also remembers the selected playback and recording devices separately for each audio host.
Several stability issues have been fixed as well. Audacity no longer crashes while a real-time effect editor is open, and changes to master track effects can now be undone. Another crash after a failed recording attempt has also been resolved.
On the MIDI handling side, the update fixes a freeze caused by double-clicking the timeline while a MIDI track is present. MIDI playback now starts from the selected position instead of always jumping back to the beginning.
Finally, Audacity 3.7.9 fixes an issue that could cause clips to use the wrong tempo after reopening a project, along with a startup freeze affecting systems with an incorrect font configuration.
