The Wine Project, a compatibility layer renowned for enabling Linux and macOS users to run Windows applications, has officially released version 10.16 as the sixth maintenance update to the stable 10.x series.
This version introduces fast synchronization through NTSync, enhancing how Windows applications manage multithreading on Linux systems. It also provides support for 16-bit applications in the new WoW64 mode, enabling legacy software to run in 64-bit environments.
Other notable changes include initial support for D3DKMT objects, part of Windows’ graphics driver model, and the generation and installation of WinMD (Windows Metadata) files, expanding support for modern Windows development tools.
In total, 34 bugs have been fixed in this release, addressing issues affecting games like Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Star Wars: Jedi Knight – Dark Forces II, and Colin McRae Rally 2, among others.
