Proton 11.0 Released with Big Compatibility Boost for Linux Gaming

Valve’s latest Proton update expands game compatibility with new playable titles, classic game fixes, better VR support, and launcher improvements.

Valve has released Proton 11.0, the latest major update to its Wine-based compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux and SteamOS, including the Steam Deck.

It rebases the stack on Wine 11.0, refreshes several graphics and compatibility components, and brings many game-specific fixes covering EA titles, VR games, and classic Resident Evil and Dino Crisis releases.

Starting with game compatibility, Proton 11.0 promotes a large group of titles that previously worked with Proton Experimental into the main Proton branch. These include Universe Generator: The Golden Sword, DCS World Steam Edition, Resident Evil (1996), Resident Evil 2 (1998), Dino Crisis, Dino Crisis 2, From Dust, Blaite, Don’t Die Dateless, Dummy!, METAL GEAR SURVIVE, Warhammer: Vermintide 2, Metal Fatigue, and SHOGUN: Total War.

In addition, several games are now listed as newly playable. The list includes Unknown Faces, Gothic 1 Classic, X-Plane 12, Breath of Fire IV, and Deadly Premonition. For Linux gamers who prefer older Windows titles, this release is particularly interesting, since quite a few of the newly supported or promoted games come from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Moreover, Valve says Proton 11.0 fixes many EA games that became unplayable after a recent EA Desktop update. The release also fixes the Steam Overlay not working correctly with many EA titles. Regarding VR support, No Man’s Sky VR mode is playable again, and Microsoft Flight Simulator receives a fix for VR controller tracking.

Several fixes target individual games. Sea of Solitude no longer shows a black screen. Crimson Desert has fixed intro video playback, and Satisfactory receives a fix for glitchy video playback. THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIII GLOBAL MATCH should no longer freeze when playing gallery videos. Blazblue Centralfiction gets a fix for its intro video not looping.

Some visible fixes affect major titles. HELLDIVERS 2 should no longer crash during high enemy-count missions. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach gets a launcher rendering fix. Far Cry 4 should no longer randomly hang during launch. Titanfall 2 receives a fix for keyboard input stutter.

There are also improvements for desktop integration and window handling. Proton 11.0 fixes KDE window maximization support, improves Brighter Shores window resizing, and improves Space Engineers dual-monitor behavior. It also fixes scaling issues in Arma Reforger when changing window modes.

On KDE Wayland, RAGE should no longer have focus problems when Alt-Tabbing. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition should behave better after being minimized and restored.

Controller-related improvements include fixed controller hotplugging for the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C and other controllers that expose multiple HID devices. Hollow Knight also gets a Steam Deck-specific fix, so the game should no longer wrongly register the Steam button as a left trigger after a recent update.

The release updates Xalia to version 0.4.9, improving controller support for a long list of launchers and installers. This includes launchers for games such as Red Faction: Armageddon, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II, Disney Epic Mickey 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY, Ys SEVEN, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, Dino Crisis, and Dino Crisis 2.

Under the hood, Proton 11.0 is now rebased on Wine 11.0. It also adds FEX 2605 for ARM64EC builds, updates VKD3D to vkd3d-1.19, DXVK to v2.7.1 from the Proton 11 support branch, DXVK-NVAPI to 0.9.1, Wine Mono to 11.0, and VKD3D-Proton to proton-20260410.

Other notable fixes include improved Rockstar Launcher popup rendering, support for Steamworks SDK 1.64, improved emoji support in Idle Trillionaire, better timezone detection, improved Kodi media player support, and support for multiple System Voice languages in Phasmophobia. Valve also fixed voice chat in the Phasmophobia lobby for desktop players.
