NVIDIA has become a Premier Sponsor of the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS) and is providing financial support for the infrastructure responsible for delivering firmware updates to Linux systems.
The announcement came from Richard Hughes, the founder and lead developer behind both fwupd and the Linux Vendor Firmware Service, enabling the project to achieve the funding target it set last year.
“This now takes us to 4 OEMs sponsoring LVFS, which means we’ve successfully reached the funding target we set for ourselves last year.”
In August 2025, Hughes released a sustainability plan stating that LVFS had grown beyond the limits of its current funding and staffing arrangements. Although the Linux Foundation was paying for the service’s hosting and Red Hat was funding the development time Hughes spent on it, a large part of the project’s operations and maintenance still relied on a single individual.
The aim was to obtain sufficient funding from vendors so as to bring in extra resources, offer backup coverage, and make it possible for LVFS to keep growing without placing an unsustainable workload on a single maintainer.
Vendors who are large hardware manufacturers and who distribute millions of firmware downloads were encouraged to either contribute engineering work or provide financial support for the shared infrastructure which benefits them. And now, NVIDIA, as the premier sponsor, has enabled LVFS to achieve that goal.
To be clear, Linux users will not see a sudden increase in NVIDIA GPU support. That’s not the case here and has nothing to do with it. Instead, they will get a more sustainable, better-supported platform for distributing firmware.
LVFS and fwupd are part of the same firmware update system. LVFS is the online service through which hardware manufacturers upload firmware packages along with metadata indicating the devices they support, while the fwupd daemon operates on the Linux system, detects hardware compatible with the system, obtains available updates, and then installs them.
GUI apps such as GNOME Software and KDE Discover can also make use of fwupd, which enables firmware updates to be displayed together with normal operating system updates. In other words, the vendor uploads the update to LVFS while fwupd carries it out and applies it on the user’s machine.
This replaces the traditional process of searching manufacturer websites and relying on firmware installation tools that (in many cases) are available only for Windows.
The rollout of NVIDIA’s DGX Spark is an example of that process in action, since the official firmware is made available via LVFS and then delivered to supported Linux systems through fwupd.
So, since the project’s funding goal has now been achieved, LVFS should be in a better position to maintain its services, support hardware vendors, and continue to make firmware updates easier and more reliable for Linux users.
