Mozilla has released a public Firefox roadmap, giving users an overview of upcoming features and browser changes.
For productivity, Mozilla plans several improvements, including a comprehensive design system update called Nova, aimed at modernizing Firefox’s UI across Android, iOS, and desktop to improve usability.
Firefox will also gain enhanced PDF editing tools as Mozilla is currently developing features for splitting, merging, and reordering PDFs directly in the browser, expanding beyond basic viewing and editing.
Customizable hotkeys are another area that will let users set Firefox keyboard shortcuts without extensions. Other planned features include curated link sharing for bookmarks and tab groups, expanded on-device translation for iOS, improvements to the search and address bar, enhanced autofill, and a new Document Picture-in-Picture feature for displaying web content in a floating window.
Regarding privacy, Mozilla plans to introduce a free built-in VPN for Firefox on Android and iOS, and desktop users will receive a redesigned private window with one-click cookie clearing.
Containers, a separate “boxes” inside the same browser that lets Firefox users separate cookies, logins, and site data into isolated browsing spaces, currently available through the Multi-Account Containers extension, will be integrated natively into Firefox.
Additional roadmap items include passkey support for Firefox Sync, integrated ad and tracker blocking in Firefox for iOS, and ongoing anti-fingerprinting protections on Android and desktop.
On the AI side, Mozilla is expanding its AI initiatives under the “AI Done Differently” section. The roadmap introduces Smart Window, an opt-in AI browsing mode alongside regular and private windows, to help users find answers, compare information, and interact with content they are viewing online.
Quick Answers, another planned AI feature for iOS, will let users ask questions by voice and receive concise AI-generated text responses. Sources will be provided for users wanting more information.
Regarding performance improvements, Mozilla is working on basic engine updates to accelerate page loads, such as prioritizing QUIC and IPv6. On Android, Firefox will add a resource monitor to display tab resource usage and a power-saving mode to limit high-consumption tabs.
For Linux users, the “Better Web” section highlights new media features such as HDR video on Windows and Linux and JPEG XL support. The roadmap also includes new web APIs like Wasm JS Promise Integration, Deferred Module Evaluation, and WebTransport.
