Today, the GParted team marked an important milestone, celebrating the twentieth anniversary of its premier disk partitioning software.
Short for GNOME Partition Editor, GParted is a free and open-source partition editor for managing disk partitions. Its graphical user interface leverages the power of GNU Parted and other disk utilities, making it easier for users to perform tasks such as creating, resizing, moving, and copying partitions without data loss.
It is commonly included in live CD/USB distributions, allowing users to manage partitions outside a live operating system environment.
Since its first public 0.0.3 release on August 26, 2004, GParted has become a fundamental and widely adopted tool in the arsenal of both novice and professional Linux system administrators worldwide. For example, it has been downloaded over 34 million times from SourceForge alone.
Over the years, the tool has evolved in functionality and accessibility. It now supports over 60 languages and is a staple in numerous Linux distributions. Hardly a Linux user hasn’t used it at some point.
Celebrating 20 years is a huge milestone for any open-source project, and GParted is no exception. This longevity proves it’s a reliable choice and still the preferred option among Linux users for managing disk partitions easily and efficiently. Happy 20th Anniversary, GPartedโyou’re fantastic!
