Immich 3.1 has been released as the latest update to the open-source, self-hosted photo and video management platform, introducing new workflow filtering options, improvements to web uploads, more flexible OIDC role synchronization, and a broad collection of bug fixes.
A very practical feature is the introduction of a new wake lock when uploads are carried out via the Immich web interface. During file transfers, the program can now prevent the device’s screen from dimming or locking, reducing the chance of uploads being interrupted. For this feature to work, Immich must be accessed via HTTPS.
The web application is also given the ability to undo archive actions. Once photos or videos have been archived, the confirmation notification now features a button which at once reverses the action, making it easier to correct accidental archiving.
The filtering features in Immich’s workflow system have received two important improvements. Instead of depending just on the asset’s original filename, asset file filters can now use the actual server-side file path.
It is now also possible to use a separate workflow filter to assess the EXIF metadata associated with photos. Although the current implementation only allows for string comparisons, support for numerical comparisons is anticipated in a future update.
Navigation in the web interface has been enhanced: when you press Ctrl+K or / to open the command palette, there is now a shortcut to the maintenance page. Moreover, the slideshow controls have been put into a container which has a blurred background, thus improving the visibility of the controls when looking at very bright images.
On the security side, the Immich administrative command-line interface includes an option that invalidates all existing sessions when a password is changed. On top of that, Users can now use a custom date range to filter the map view, making the feature more similar to the filtering options available via the web interface.
However, the release includes one breaking platform change: the Immich mobile application no longer supports iOS 14. Users running that version of Apple’s mobile operating system will need to upgrade their device software to continue receiving newer Immich releases.
In addition to the changes mentioned in the headline, Immich 3.1 includes numerous corrections across the server, web, and mobile applications. These cover zero-byte image uploads, HEIF processing, video playback security policies, external-library workflow triggers, slideshow behavior, search filters, album creation, Android backup handling, Live Photo downloads, right-to-left interface layouts, and several navigation and responsiveness issues.
