Linux Mint will begin publishing updated HWE (Hardware Enablement) ISO images to enhance installation support for new hardware, providing users with installation media that include newer kernels than those in standard release images.
In Linux distros, HWE refers to offering a newer Linux kernel and related hardware support components on a stable operating system base. Newer laptops, CPUs, chipsets, Wi-Fi adapters, and graphics hardware often require updated kernel drivers not available in the original ISO.
Linux Mint made this decision to address compatibility issues with new hardware. So, rather than waiting for the next major release, the project will publish refreshed ISO images that include a newer kernel from the package base.
The first release is Linux Mint 22.3 HWE, which includes Linux kernel 6.17. The standard Linux Mint 22.3 release remains available, but the HWE image offers improved support for newer machines when the standard installer does not detect or fully support their hardware.
Previously, Linux Mint addressed this issue with its “Edge” images, also designed for newer hardware. The HWE naming clarifies the purpose and directly associates the images with hardware enablement: the same Mint release, a newer kernel, and improved compatibility with recent systems.
Current Linux Mint users do not need to reinstall due to the availability of an HWE ISO. These images are intended primarily for new installations, especially on systems with hardware compatibility issues. For older or already supported hardware, the standard ISO remains the recommended choice.
