OpenShot 3.5.1 Video Editor Released With Built-In Proxy Editing

OpenShot 3.5.1 introduces built-in proxy editing, improved timeline zooming, multi-selection trimming, enhanced ComfyUI tools, and user interface scaling.

OpenShot, a free and open-source cross-platform video editor, has released version 3.5.1 as the first update in the 3.5 series.

The most significant new feature is “Optimize Video,” which adds built-in proxy editing and generates lower-resolution media for editing, ensuring smoother playback, scrubbing, and previews while maintaining final export quality. The release notes also highlight backend improvements, including a new proxy service, optimized preview handling, and cleanup tools for optimized videos.

OpenShot 3.5.1 also enhances timeline handling as the zooming is now more accurately centered on the playhead. Additional fixes address thumbnail flicker, horizontal scrolling using Shift and the mouse wheel, and improved cursor alignment for the razor tool on the qwidget timeline backend.

Multi-selection trimming has been introduced as well to simplify resizing and re-timing aligned clips. Other improvements include shared edge handling, grouped trim and retime behavior, more accurate preview selection during grouped edits, and less drift when adjusting clips.

Apart from these highlights, the release expands OpenShot’s AI-related ComfyUI tools. The updated tools now support depth extraction, line extraction, and reference image workflows. Plus, “Change Video Style” has been upgraded to WAN VACE with reference image, depth, and Canny control.

A new “User Interface Scale” setting has been added to improve usability across various displays. The option is available in preferences but is disabled when the legacy timeline is enabled, as fractional scaling may still cause visual artifacts in that mode.

Finally, version 3.5.1 offers several smaller improvements, including faster preview dialogs, better title thumbnail refresh, updated translations, and an increased minimum libopenshot requirement to 0.7.
