Nine months after its previous 1.8.1 release, Distrobox, a user-friendly tool that lets users easily create and manage containerized environments from their favorite Linux distributions using tools like Podman or Docker under the hood, has just released version 1.8.2.
This update focuses heavily on cleanup and stability. It decommissions Clear Linux support, introduces unshare-groups capability, and extends manifest definitions with “include” for more modular configuration. Bash completion gets smarter, and several formatting and quoting issues in distrobox-create are resolved for a smoother command-line experience.
Significant under-the-hood improvements include better NVIDIA driver handling on Fedora and openSUSE, enhanced systemd compatibility, and new support for Chimera Linux and Alt Linux containers. The update also improves doas integration, performance around socket searches, and passwordless operation in certain setups.
On the documentation front, the project now refers to Silverblue systems as “Atomic Desktops”, adds setup instructions for Hyprland, and includes compatibility details for Debian 13, CentOS Stream 10, and Fedora 42.
Last but not least, it’s worth noting that this release welcomes 20 new first-time contributors and a new maintainer—a clear sign that the project continues to grow and is gaining even more traction among users.
