PipeWire 1.6.5 Multimedia Framework Fixes Muted Audio Output Issues

PipeWire 1.6.5 fixes muted audio output issues, improves jack detection behavior, and adds more PulseAudio server hardening.

PipeWire, a widely used open-source multimedia server for audio and video on Linux, has released version 1.6.4, bringing fixes for audio output, JACK tunnel handling, ROC receiver behavior, ALSA stability, and PulseAudio server hardening.

One main fix addresses muted output in some cases. Developers also partially reverted a line-out mute change after it caused problems and left audio muted when plugging and unplugging jacks.

Another fix in pw-filter addresses buffers getting stuck on a port, leaving it silent. Related SPA changes now rate-limit out-of-buffer errors, reducing noisy error reports.

PipeWire 1.6.5 also removes the pipe filter from filter-graph. The release notes say the filter was “broken by design” and was a security problem, so it has been dropped.

The modules side gets more fixes. ROC receiver start and stop behavior improved, memory leaks fixed, and the JACK tunnel module now uses the correct MIDI buffer size.

SPA also gets an audioconvert renegotiation fix for cases when the graph rate changes while the resampler is disabled. Plus, the ALSA backend received a fix for a potential crash during logging, and the PulseAudio server gets additional security checks and hardening fixes.

For more details, see the changelog.

PipeWire 1.6.5 is available now from the project’s GitLab release page and source archive. Linux distributions are expected to ship it through their regular update channels.
