PipeWire 1.6.4 Multimedia Framework Released With JACK, Bluetooth, and ALSA Fixes

PipeWire 1.6.4 is now available, addressing JACK glitches, Bluetooth issues, ALSA sequencer crashes, and LADSPA plugin loading problems.

PipeWire, a widely used open-source multimedia server for audio and video on Linux, has released version 1.6.4.

The primary improvement is enhanced JACK compatibility. PipeWire now avoids emitting ports unsupported by JACK, resolving glitches in Ardour and other JACK applications. Additionally, it ignores non-DSP ports to prevent unnecessary callbacks.

Several SPA-related issues have been addressed as well. LADSPA plugin loading now supports LADSPA_PATH values ending with a trailing slash. A segmentation fault in alsa-seq when removing devices has been resolved.

On top of that, mixer handling now permits negative gain. ALSA sequencer port names now include a colon between client and port, and ACP no longer overrides user-selected ports when availability changes.

In the core PipeWire component, this release resolves a crash that occurred when loading plugins before pw_init() was called. Bluetooth functionality also benefits from several backported fixes and minor improvements, though these are not detailed in the release notes.

Finally, GStreamer integration now correctly handles crop metadata, and pw-cat properly saves WAVEX files.
