Linux Mint has released its regular monthly newsletter; this time, we have some exciting updates to share with you.
First, the team confirmed that work on LMDE 7, codenamed “Gigi,” is already moving quickly. As you expect, this upcoming release will be based on Debian 13 “Trixie” and will also bring in the improvements introduced with Linux Mint 22.2.
On top of that, it will feature OEM installation support, which had already been implemented during the 22.2 development cycle and has since been tested on the new Debian base.
Currently, developers are adapting libadwaita 1.5 changes to libadwaita 1.7 and re-applying necessary patches. One notable change: LMDE 7 will only be released for amd64, as i386 is no longer fully supported upstream in Debian 13. The beta release is scheduled for September.
Meanwhile, attention is also turning toward Linux Mint 22.3, which is planned for December 2025 despite the recent delays around 22.2. The developers made it clear that this will be a short release cycle with a focus on delivering several long-planned features. Among them are:
- A new application menu
- A refreshed status applet
- Improved Wayland-compatible handling for keyboard layouts and input methods
So while the spotlight is currently on LMDE 7, Mint users can also expect the next standard release before the end of the year.
