KDE Gear 26.04 Marks KDE’s 30th Anniversary With App Updates

KDE Gear 26.04 apps collection celebrates KDE's 30th anniversary with updates to Dolphin, Kdenlive, Merkuro, NeoChat, and more.

KDE has released Gear 26.04, its latest application suite update, as the “KDE at 30” edition to commemorate the project’s 30th anniversary.

Among the headline changes, Dolphin file manager now allows users to assign keyboard shortcuts to almost any menu option, plugin, or extension. KDE says this should make repetitive tasks easier, such as quickly switching between file sorting modes by name and by creation date.

The release also updates KDE’s personal information management applications. Merkuro Calendar features a redesigned schedule view and event editor, offering a modern layout and more relevant on-screen information.

KOrganizer, the calendar application within Kontact, receives interface refinements for a cleaner and more informative experience. KDE Itinerary improves its dialogs and adds new travel information for Switzerland.

In Kdenlive, KDE’s non-linear video editor, new features include animated previews for compositions, enabling users to view transitions before applying them, and support for mirroring the monitor to an external display for enhanced preview capabilities.

Kdenlive also introduces several workflow improvements, such as importing clips directly to a selected timeline position, always zooming on the mouse position, automatic audio thumbnail generation, automatic transition duration adjustment, and simultaneous speed changes for multiple clips.

Additional updates include a redesigned welcome page for AudioTube, KClock’s new overlay feature for mobile lock screens during timers, and NeoChat’s support for a rich text editor and threaded conversations.

For more details, see the official announcement. KDE Gear 26.04 tarballs are available on the source info page for manual compilation, and the full changelog provides additional details on the update.

Most KDE Gear 26.04 apps will soon be available on Flathub and Snap Store. Rolling release distributions can expect the app collection to be added to their respective distros’ repositories in the coming days and weeks.
