GParted Live 1.6.0-10: Enhanced Stability and Updated Features

GParted Live's latest release removes cpufrequtils, adds pm-utils, and updates the Linux kernel to v6.10.11.

GParted celebrated its 20th anniversary just recently. Now, the development team behind GParted Live has released the latest stable release, version 1.6.0-10, which includes a host of updated packages and functional enhancements.

For the unfamiliar, it is a bootable live Debian-based Linux distro designed for partitioning tasks that runs directly from a CD, USB drive, or other bootable media without needing to be installed on a computerโ€™s hard drive.

As you can guess from its name, GParted Live’s main purpose is to allow users to manage disk partitions independently of the installed operating system, with the main tool for this being GPrated.

Key Updates and Improvements

Central to this release is the updated GParted 1.6.0 application, which continues to serve as a critical tool for disk partitioning tasks. Users will notice several notable changes that streamline functionality and adapt to the latest software environment:

  • Package Updates and Removals: In a notable change, the cpufrequtils package has been removed from the live system’s list, as it is no longer available in the Debian repository. Meanwhile, the inclusion of pm-utils has been introduced, thanks to suggestions from the community.
  • Dialog Interface Changes: The release also standardizes the dialog interface within the GParted Live’s programs, such as gl-screenshot. From now on, zenity will be the sole dialog tool, replacing gdialog and Xdialog, which have been phased out from the Debian repositories.
  • Operating System Base: The update is based on the Debian Sid repository as of September 28, 2024, ensuring that all components are cutting-edge.
  • Kernel Update: The Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.10.11, which is expected to offer better hardware compatibility and performance enhancements across various devices.

Apart from those, the developers have also addressed a potential compatibility issue with older NVIDIA graphics cards.

Users experiencing display issues with the X Desktop are advised to select “Other modes of GParted Live” at boot and opt for “GParted Live (Safe graphics setting, vga-normal),” ensuring broader hardware compatibility.

Refer to the announcement for more information about all the changes to the new version.
