Fwupd 2.0.12 Released with Thunderbolt Emulation

Fwupd 2.0.12 brings Thunderbolt host emulation, SBOM parsing, and important fixes for Dell, HP, and Logitech devices.

Two weeks after its previous 2.0.11 release, Fwupd, an open-source utility designed to make updating firmware on Linux-based systems easier and more automatic, rolled out its new 2.0.12 version.

One of the standout additions in this release is a new configuration option for enforcing immutable device enumeration, which enhances security by preventing unauthorized modifications to device listings.

Additionally, Thunderbolt host controllers now benefit from device emulation support, making firmware updates more reliable for these high-speed interfaces.

For UEFI-related updates, fwupd now performs efivarfs free space checks for critical security databases (dbx, db, KEK, and PK), ensuring that essential firmware updates don’t fail due to insufficient storage.

The update also introduces improved parsing of SBOM (Software Bill of Materials) data from fwupdx64.efi, providing better transparency in firmware components.

Another notable improvement is the ability to load multiple coSWID (Concise Software Identification) blobs from PE files, streamlining software identification and compliance checks.

On the bug fixes side, this release addresses several pesky issues, including a regression affecting DFOTA modem updates and a problem where PCI devices lacked vendor IDs in modem-manager. Thunderbolt updates have also been made more robust, particularly for devices with unconventional version formats.

Dell hardware users will appreciate fixes for HECI unsupported status (0x0b) errors, while enterprise users managing Dell servers will benefit from proper detection of Redfish reboot requests—a crucial feature for remote administration.

Other fixes include:

  • Preventing dbx updates on HP Elitedesk G6 mini systems where they could cause issues.
  • Resolving input blips by converting asus-hid and legion-hid2 devices to hidraw.
  • Ensuring Logitech RDFU-capable devices no longer create unnecessary radio interfaces.
  • Correcting firmware artifact filenames sent to Redfish BMC for accurate updates.

Lastly, fwupd 2.0.12 extends compatibility with several new devices, including:

  • HP Portable USB-C Hub
  • Additional Foxconn 5G modem products
  • More Intel Arc Battlemage GPUs
