Audacity 3.7.4 Patches Critical Crashes and Rendering Issues

Audacity 3.7.4 open-source audio editor fixes crashes, waveform rendering, and clip deletion issues.

The popular open-source audio editing software Audacity has just released version 3.7.4, a patch update that squashes bugs and smooths out the user experience.

The update fixes a crash that could occur when closing large unsaved projects, as well as another that popped up when using real-time effects with delay compensation.

Beyond stability improvements, the update also irons out some workflow quirks. For instance, applying a Studio Fade Out at the end of a clip no longer creates an unwanted new clip, and joining two clips with pitch adjustment won’t accidentally delete one of them.

Additionally, muted tracks no longer block effect previews, a subtle but welcome quality-of-life fix for editors who frequently toggle mute during mixing.

A couple of technical fixes round out the release. Waveform rendering on clipped audio has been corrected, ensuring visual accuracy, while a miscalculation in the Hamming window derivative—an important function for certain audio analyses—has been resolved.

Lastly, Mac users on older systems haven’t been left behind either, as the update resolves compilation issues on legacy macOS versions.
