Archinstall 3.0.15 Brings COSMIC Desktop

Archinstall 3.0.15, a guided installer for Arch Linux, introduces COSMIC desktop support, rEFInd boot manager integration, smarter Zram defaults, and more.

Archinstall, a guided, user-friendly TUI installer for Arch Linux with a menu-driven setup that provides a semi-automated alternative to the traditional manual Arch installation process, has just rolled out version 3.0.15.

One of the most visible changes is that the COSMIC desktop environment is now available without requiring the advanced flag, making it easier to select during installation.

Support for the rEFInd boot manager has also been added, expanding bootloader options beyond the traditional defaults. For printing setups, the installer can now handle CUPS installation directly.

System configuration defaults have been refined in several areas as well. Zram is now configured dynamically based on established best practices, with support for selecting the compression algorithm.

Moreover, LVM handling has been improved by making the root volume size adaptive instead of fixed, and base-devel is no longer installed by default. Bootloader installation now defaults to removable media locations, and users can explicitly select any additional repository during setup.

On the networking and power management side, the installer can now use IWD as a backend for network selection, and support has been added for power-profiles-daemon and tuned as selectable power management solutions. Additionally, a post-install timer has been introduced to improve usability at the end of the installation flow.

A large number of bug fixes address long-standing and edge-case issues. These include resolving mirror list hangs when the status endpoint is unavailable, improving mirror sorting logic, fixing LVM and LUKS creation and reporting problems, and correcting behavior for host-to-target installations to avoid polluting the host system.

Several bootloader-related issues were addressed, including removing the GRUB removable fallback path and clarifying the disclosure of bootloader and keymap choices.

Additional fixes address system configuration details, including proper handling of /etc/resolv.conf when systemd-resolved is used, vconsole configuration compatibility with mkinitcpio v40, service naming adjustments, reduced warning message spam, and improved menu ordering in preparation for upcoming NVIDIA changes.

Finally, numerous smaller corrections round out the release, including translation fixes, documentation clarifications, and cleanup steps during image building.

Archinstall 3.0.15 is expected to be included in the upcoming January Arch 2026.01.01 installation ISO, scheduled to arrive tomorrow, January 1st. However, if you’re using an older ISO, you can easily update Archinstall (before launching it) to its latest version by running pacman -S archinstall after the ISO boots.
