The KDE Project has announced KDE Frameworks 6.30, the latest monthly update to its collection of more than 70 add-on libraries for Qt that provide much of the underlying functionality used by KDE Plasma and KDE applications.
KDE reworked how it handles cached thumbnails, including reading them in bounded batches before generating new previews. KIO now avoids MIME content sniffing on slow filesystems, and HTTP uploads no longer require large request bodies to be kept entirely in memory. Upload progress reporting has also been fixed.
File handling sees several other improvements. Folder properties can now report how much disk space a directory actually occupies rather than just the size of its contained data.
Copying files into directories with the setgid bit set now correctly preserves the destination group. KDE also improved native directory deletion on Unix systems and fixed several issues involving file templates, symlinks, and rename operations.
KImageFormats also receives a useful round of fixes. KDE has re-enabled decoding of certain non-standard HEIF images, along with fixes affecting HEIC cropping, JPEG 2000, JPEG XL, AVIF, and RGB image handling.
On the multimedia side, KFileMetaData can now extract embedded cover artwork from Matroska streams through its FFmpeg extractor.
In KWallet, the update fixes memory leaks in kwalletd, improves propagation of a wallet’s locked state, fixes logic errors when opening wallets, and ensures collections are correctly reported as unlocked after PAM authentication. It also includes considerable cleanup of old and unused KWallet and KSecretsService code.
Kirigami, KDE’s framework for building convergent application interfaces, includes a long list of smaller UI fixes. These include improved touchscreen behavior for OverlaySheet, better spacing and layouts in forms, fixes for switches, safer toolbar positioning, and improvements to pinned items in ColumnView.
Finally, KTextEditor brings several fixes to its Vi mode, particularly around tabs, selections, saving files, registers, and block operations. KSVG changes how SvgItem manages textures, while Baloo now excludes .snapshots directories from indexing.
