System76 Unveils Oryx Pro Linux Laptop with COSMIC Desktop Beta

The Oryx Pro is System76’s latest flagship Linux laptop, powered by Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS Beta and the new COSMIC Desktop Beta.

System76 has announced that the company’s new Oryx Pro will be the first Linux laptop to ship with both the Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS Beta and the COSMIC Desktop Beta preinstalled, marking the public’s first chance to experience System76’s long-awaited in-house desktop environment out of the box.

Built from a silver aluminum chassis, the refreshed Oryx Pro targets performance-focused users who want cutting-edge hardware and open-source flexibility in one package.

Inside, it’s powered by AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor—the company’s fastest mobile CPU option yet—paired with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 graphics, bringing serious GPU horsepower for both gaming and creative workloads.

The laptop features a 16-inch 2K (2560×1600) display with a 240 Hz refresh rate and a 16:10 aspect ratio, providing smoother motion and additional vertical space for enhanced productivity.

Additionally, buyers can configure the system with up to 96 GB of DDR5 memory and up to 8 TB of NVMe storage, providing workstation-level specifications in a portable form factor.

Connectivity options cover all the essentials, including Thunderbolt 4, USB-C, HDMI 2.1, and Wi-Fi 6E, ensuring solid performance whether plugged in or on the move. Battery life and weight vary depending on configuration, but the aluminum build keeps the laptop sturdy without feeling bulky.

This release marks a significant milestone for the COSMIC Desktop, which has been under active development as a Rust-based, fully independent Linux desktop environment, and now makes its official debut in System76 products. In addition to Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS beta, the laptop can also be ordered with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

System76 ships the Oryx Pro with NVIDIA and AMD drivers preinstalled. The laptop is available for configuration now on System76’s website for Linux users eager to try System76’s next-generation desktop before its final release, starting at $2,599.
