HandBrake 1.10 Arrives with New Presets, Metadata Improvements

HandBrake 1.10, an open-source video transcoder, brings new presets, AV1 decoding improvements, better metadata passthru, and numerous fixes.

Almost six months after its previous 1.9.1 release, the popular open-source video transcoder HandBrake has just rolled out version 1.10, packing a mix of new features, performance tweaks, and platform-specific refinements.

One of the headline additions is the new “Social 10MB” presets, aimed at making quick, size-friendly video exports a breeze. Metadata handling has also become more sophisticated, now preserving more details like creation date, cover art, and even location.

There’s a noticeable performance boost too, with fixes for excessive memory use during deep scans and improved handling of high-resolution frame metrics in the Framerate Shaper.

On the video side, users now have more control over encoder color range, updated NVEnc CQ ranges, and fixes for VCN encoder presets. Audio work includes proper EAC3 + Atmos signaling in MP4, new options for track name passthrough control, and improved fallback behavior when no audio track is found.

Subtitles benefit from native SubRip/UTF-8 passthrough to MKV, plus a fix for potential crashes when burning bitmap subs.

Under the hood, HandBrake 1.10 updates a host of third-party libraries—ranging from FFmpeg 7.1.1 to the latest versions of x264, x265, and SVT-AV1—ensuring both performance and codec compatibility remain top-notch.

Platform-specific improvements are also in the spotlight.

  • Linux users get stability fixes for Opus/Vorbis in WebM, hidden presets for unavailable hardware encoders, and an updated set of active translations.
  • macOS users can now take advantage of the VideoToolbox AV1 hardware decoder, a Metal-accelerated Render Sub filter, reduced CPU usage with hardware decoding, and better integration with Time Machine.
  • Windows sees new preferences for title range mode defaults and queue completion actions, DirectX-based AV1 decoding on ARM devices, optimizations for ARM64, and a handful of fresh translations.

Important heads-up: make sure there are no pending encodes in your queue, and back up any custom presets or preferences, as they might not work with the new release. Windows users also need to have Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime 8.0 installed before upgrading.

For more information about all the changes in the new version, refer to the changelog. HandBrake 1.10 video transcoder is available for download across all platforms, including Linux, Windows, and macOS.
