The open-source remote desktop software RustDesk just dropped its latest update, version 1.4.1. On the features side, the standout addition is the new Terminal support, enabling smoother command-line operations directly through RustDesk.
Plus, there’s also UDP and IPv6 punching, which should significantly improve connection reliability and speed, especially for users dealing with tricky network configurations.
For users who use a stylus, RustDesk 1.4.1 introduces stylus support, providing a much more intuitive experience for drawing or annotating remotely. Additionally, numeric one-time passwords are now an option, adding a layer of convenience and security.
Another new addition is the “force-always-relay” option, available right from your address books and accessible devices.
Moreover, this update has tightened security by enforcing secure TCP connections for login sessions. Plus, they’ve addressed performance tweaks like shortening the retry interval for network errors from 18 seconds down to just 3 seconds. This means quicker reconnections and less downtime if your connection drops.
On the fix front, for macOS users, the resolution handling issue on Retina displays is sorted. The frustrating key input lag issue on macOS clients has also been resolved. Additionally, macOS users who found themselves unable to input passwords after locking their screens through RustDesk will find this irritating bug squashed.
Windows users also get a handful of fixes, notably resolving crashes on 32-bit camera connections and compatibility issues with Windows Server Core and Windows 7 x86 systems. On the Linux front, the RustDesk app image now correctly shows its icon.
Finally, the team tackled several performance annoyances, such as high CPU usage on macOS when the service is stopped and excessive CPU load caused by rustdesk.service being idle.
The software is available for download for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Linux users can choose between native RPM and DEB packages and distro-agnostic AppImage and Flatpak.
