Ubuntu 24.10 Nears Its End of Life

Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) reaches end-of-life on July 10, marking the end of official support, updates, and security patches for this short-term release.

Ubuntu 24.10, codenamed Oracular Oriole, is approaching its end of life (EOL) on July 10, 2025, marking the conclusion of its nine-month support period.

Initially released on October 10, 2024, the short-term release will soon stop receiving security updates and bug fixes, leaving systems potentially vulnerable if not upgraded.

According to an announcement by Canonical’s Utkarsh Gupta, Ubuntu Security Notices (USNs) will no longer include updates for 24.10 after the EOL date.

While this is standard for Ubuntu’s non-LTS (Long-Term Support) releases, users still running Oracular Oriole should plan their migration to Ubuntu 25.04—the next supported version—sooner rather than later.

Ubuntu’s official upgrade guide provides detailed instructions and potential caveats. 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) remains actively maintained (till mid-January 2026), with regular security patches and critical bug fixes.

Keep in mind that sticking with an out-of-support build carries many risks. Once an Ubuntu release passes its EOL milestone, unpatched privilege-escalation bugs or remote code execution flaws accumulate quickly. So, it’s highly recommended not to wait until the last minute; upgrade now.

While Ubuntu’s short-term releases like 24.10 often serve as staging grounds for features destined for the next LTS, they’re more than experimental builds. Their brief nine-month support window can pose challenges for stability-focused users. Sticking with a Long-Term Support release remains the safer bet for most individuals and organizations.
