Proxmox has rolled out the beta release of Datacenter Manager 0.9, giving users a new centralized way to keep track of clusters and nodes. This beta version is built on Debian 13 “Trixie”, comes with Linux kernel 6.14 as the default, and ships with ZFS 2.3.4 for storage.
As this is a new addition to the Proxmox family, still in development but nearing its first stable release, I’d like to briefly explain what it is all about.
The project aims to provide a centralized overview of Proxmox VE nodes and clusters, plus basic management tasks like migrating virtual machines—without requiring special cluster networking. Unlike vCenter, which is a separate product in VMware’s ecosystem, Datacenter Manager is built as a standalone Proxmox tool.
Under the hood, everything is written in Rust, from the backend API server to the CLI tools. The frontend is powered by Proxmox’s new widget toolkit, giving the web UI a faster, more modern feel with better accessibility and compatibility.
The highlight in this beta release is EVPN configuration for Software-Defined Networking, making it possible to manage networking between clusters from a single interface.
On top of that, the search functionality has been improved, so finding resources should be a lot quicker. Metric collection has also been optimized to reduce overhead, and administrators now have privilege management directly from the access control UI.
For those already testing earlier builds, there’s good news: upgrading from the Alpha release is seamless. Just follow the guide, and you’ll be up and running without having to start from scratch.
Lastly, the beta phase will run until the first stable release, which Proxmox plans to deliver later this year. Developers say the project has already been tested with more than 5,000 remotes and 10,000 virtual guests, and they’re aiming for similar numbers in production.
Plans also include integration with Proxmox Backup Server, with support for other Proxmox projects like Mail Gateway possibly coming later.
