LibreOffice 26.2 Released With Faster Performance, Compatibility Improvements

LibreOffice 26.2 open-source office suite introduces faster performance, improved compatibility, and hundreds of fixes across Writer, Calc, and Impress.

The Document Foundation has launched LibreOffice 26.2, now available for download on Windows, macOS, and Linux, bringing performance, compatibility, and usability improvements.

Overall, file opening, editing, and saving operations are now faster across the suite. Compatibility with documents created in proprietary office software has also been improved.

In Writer, floating tables behave more predictably with pagination controls such as “Keep with next” and “Don’t split,” reducing unexpected page breaks. Change tracking has been improved, with better formatting preservation, cleaner handling of partially deleted paragraphs, and better management of interdependent edits.

In addition, new direction-aware paragraph alignment options make it easier to reuse styles across left-to-right and right-to-left documents, while automatic RTL detection during typing can now be enabled at the style level.

Calc sees improvements in performance and interoperability. Pasting large datasets from Microsoft Excel is significantly improved by supporting the BIFF12 clipboard format, removing previous size limitations. Sorting has been refined as well, with better natural sort behavior, persistent locale settings, and improved handling of decimal separators.

On the performance side, when working with spreadsheets containing many hidden columns or shapes, operations are noticeably faster, and removing duplicates and rejecting tracked changes is now completed more quickly.

Impress benefits from interface refinements and improvements in media handling. On Windows systems, video and audio playback now uses Microsoft Media Foundation for better out-of-the-box codec support. Plus, several dialogs and panels have been updated to use more native widgets.

Presentation workflows also gain practical additions, such as inserting hyperlinks directly from the context menu and copying dialog screenshots to the clipboard.

Beyond the core applications, LibreOffice 26.2 expands its file format and interoperability capabilities. Markdown import and export are now supported, including clipboard workflows and template-based imports. EPUB export performance has been improved and now includes a progress indicator.

On top of that, the handling of embedded fonts with restrictive licenses has been made explicit, prompting users to choose between editable and read-only modes rather than having fonts silently substituted.

Under the hood, Skia rendering is now mandatory on Windows and macOS to improve consistency and performance, while Linux benefits from faster SVG pattern rendering. Scripting and automation have been updated to support Python 3.12 and expanded standard library support, alongside new capabilities in ScriptForge.

LibreOffice 26.2 is available for download for Windows, macOS, and Linux with support for more than 120 languages. Platform changes include a new minimum requirement of macOS 11 on Apple systems and updated CPU requirements for official Linux builds.
