LibreOffice 25.8.5 Released with 62 Bug Fixes Across Writer, Calc, and Impress

The LibreOffice 25.8.5 update delivers 62 fixes improving stability, compatibility, and performance across all core applications.

The Document Foundation has released LibreOffice 25.8.3 as a fifth maintenance update in the 25.8 series, addressing a wide range of bugs reported by users since the release of version 25.8.4.

Many of the fixes focus on better DOCX and PPTX compatibility. Issues with opening and saving files have been addressed, including overlapping redlines in DOCX files that required repeated “Accept All” or “Reject All” actions, layout problems after section breaks, and image distortion when importing Word documents. The update also fixes round-trip problems where documents saved in LibreOffice did not reopen correctly in Microsoft Office.

Impress now works better with PowerPoint files. This update fixes problems such as invalid PPTX exports, animation errors, loss of OLE object data, broken internal links, and issues with stock charts and custom shapes. It also stops PPT and PPTX files from crashing or leaking memory when switching to notes view. Legacy VML content in PPTX files is now imported correctly.

Writer stability and layout handling have also been improved. The update fixes freezes when opening certain documents, incorrect spacing around continuous section breaks, bullet style inconsistencies tied to indentation levels, and issues affecting ruby text insertion. Spellchecking has been refined to correctly recognize abbreviations ending in periods and words containing non-ASCII apostrophes.

Calc now runs more smoothly. The update fixes hangs when formatting very small numbers as fractions, corrects XLOOKUP behavior in horizontal searches with empty cells, and ensures data providers are inserted into the right sheet. COUNTIFS now handles empty cells correctly.

Beyond file format compatibility, LibreOffice 25.8.5 resolves several crash conditions, including errors when saving ODS files with moved form controls and crashes triggered by undoing shape drags with modifier keys.

The release also addresses UI issues, including missing icons in specific Windows AArch64 builds using Skia rendering, incorrect dark-mode color behavior in charts and labels, and theme update inconsistencies in Base.

Finally, exporting files is now more reliable. The update fixes issues like dashed lines exporting as solid in SVG, chart text disappearing in PDFs with dark UI themes, and problems extracting multi-page SVG content from ODG files.

The next update, 25.8.6, is scheduled for late March. LibreOffice 25.8 will be supported through June 12, 2026, after which it’ll reach the end-of-life for that release series. Just a quick note that the latest version of the office suite is LibreOffice 26.2, released earlier this month.
