KDE Plasma 6.7 Will Offer Instant Light and Dark Mode Switching

KDE developers have kicked off work on Plasma 6.7, adding an instant light and dark mode switch to the Brightness and Color widget.

Although the Plasma 6.6 desktop has not yet been released (scheduled for February 17), KDE developers have already begun work on version 6.7, as some early details about its planned features are emerging.

One of the most visible additions is a new switch in the Brightness and Color widget that lets users toggle between light and dark modes instantly. Additionally, KDE developers note that a smooth cross-fade transition may be added later, but the current work focuses on functionality.

Audio input handling in Plasma 6.7 will also be expanded with a global push-to-talk feature. When configured, all microphones remain muted system-wide until a chosen key is held down. The implementation applies across devices rather than per application, targeting users who frequently rely on voice communication and want predictable microphone behavior.

On top of that, several System Settings pages have been refined to appear only when relevant hardware is present. For example, Game Controller, Mouse, and Touchpad sections will be hidden unless the corresponding devices are detected, reducing visual clutter and making navigation more context-aware.

Touchscreen interaction has also been improved, with adjustments to how Plasma’s global edit mode behaves on touch-enabled devices.

Discover, KDE’s software center, gains more structure in its Games section. Sub-categories for game launchers and game tools have been added, making it easier to distinguish between full games and supporting software.

Finally, on the technical side, Plasma 6.7 introduces support for monitoring network activity on FreeBSD within System Monitor and related widgets.
