KDE Gear 25.08 Apps Collection Rolls Out, Here’s What’s New

KDE Gear 25.08 apps collection arrives with new travel tools, productivity boosts, better search in Dolphin, and more.

Today, over a month after the 25.04.3 release, the KDE team has rolled out the brand-new KDE Gear 25.08 “Summertime Edition” apps collection, bringing a range of new features.

One of them is aimed at travelers, who will appreciate the upgrades to Itinerary, KDE’s all-in-one trip management tool. In this release, you can now manually enter train or bus trips without relying solely on timetables, making it easier to plan journeys in places where schedules aren’t fully digitized.

It also expands its alternative connection searches to include ferries and flights, plus lets you pick any transfer stop as your destination. And once you’re on the move, new live maps from OpenRailwayMap provide detailed views of rail infrastructure, track speeds, and more.

Productivity apps get their share of love, too. Akonadi, the data engine behind KDE’s email, calendar, and contact management tools, has seen memory usage slashed by around 75% for certain resources. It also improves compatibility with Microsoft’s InTune enterprise authentication.

Meanwhile, KOrganizer adds a faster date picker and better tooltips, and Kleopatra now lets you open multiple encrypted notepads in separate windows for multitasking.

On the system side, Dolphin—KDE’s file manager—introduces two distinct search modes: a lightning-fast indexed search and a slower but more exhaustive simple search. The View Mode switcher has also gained extra options, letting you sort, toggle previews, and show hidden files right from the dropdown.

For remote support, KRFB now handles non-European alphabets, making it easier to share your screen globally.

Lastly, messaging via Neochat now includes polls and per-thread context menus, while language-learning tool Artikulate is fully ported to Qt6, and kHangman adds Greek alphabet support. Even KDE’s mobile-friendly Angelfish browser gets new keyboard shortcuts, right-click history navigation, and the option to disable ad blocking.

Most KDE Gear 25.08 apps will soon be available on Flathub and Snap Store. Rolling release distributions can expect the app collection in their respective distros’ repositories in the coming days and weeks.
