KDE Frameworks 6.31 Released with File Management and Text Encoding Improvements

KDE Frameworks 6.31 improves file copying and moving, text encoding detection, text editing, metadata extraction, and more.

KDE has released Frameworks 6.31, the latest monthly update to its collection of add-on libraries built on top of Qt, providing essential functionality for KDE Plasma and a wide range of KDE applications.

One area receiving attention is KIO, the framework responsible for file operations. This release fixes issues with how copying and moving progress is calculated and displayed, including incorrect percentages and inaccurate totals when files or directories are skipped during transfers.

KIO also improves file search results, which now update properly when files are renamed or deleted. Thumbnail caching has been adjusted to prevent unnecessary regeneration of previews, while trash monitoring now watches physical trash directories for changes. Additional fixes address FTP file timestamps, symbolic link creation, and handling of remote filesystems.

Another set of changes concerns KCodecs, particularly its automatic text encoding detection. The updated KEncodingProber improves recognition of UTF-8, UTF-16, Latin-1, and Windows-1252, with additional adjustments for Japanese, Chinese, and Korean encodings.

The changes also address cases where invalid text was incorrectly identified as UTF-8, helping applications display files with non-English characters more reliably.

KTextEditor, the component used by applications such as Kate and KWrite, receives several Vi-mode improvements. These include support for numeric keypad digits when entering command counts, addition and subtraction operations in visual mode, and fixes to numeric operations.

Other changes improve cursor synchronization, accessibility text boundaries, and automatic file reloading. The color theme selector has been moved to the View menu, reflecting that the setting applies to the current view.

On the UI side, Kirigami, KDE’s framework for building adaptable application interfaces, fixes an issue where rapid touchscreen taps were ignored during animations. The update also corrects submenu behavior in collapsed navigation drawers, form layout problems, and the visibility of certain menu items.

Breeze Icons gains new Bluetooth speaker icons and a dedicated tab-close icon, plus fixes for MIME-type icon alignment.

KFileMetaData now extracts additional information through FFmpeg, including GPS coordinates, creation timestamps, and Apple-specific metadata. It also fixes crashes caused by malformed files.

KImageFormats improves OpenEXR image handling with support for metadata saved by Photoshop, corrections to alpha-channel interpretation, and additional image subtypes.

For applications using DAV services, KDAV introduces support for registering and unregistering push notifications, along with incremental synchronization using sync tokens.

Lastly, KDE’s Syntax Highlighting framework adds support for LRC lyrics files, updates systemd unit highlighting for version 262, and expands coverage of Zsh syntax, including newer command substitution forms.

KDE Frameworks 6.31 also contains numerous smaller fixes and internal improvements across other components, including KWallet, KNotifications, KConfig, and KArchive.

For more information, see the official announcement.

As usual, KDE recommends installing Frameworks through your Linux distribution’s package manager. Availability will depend on each distribution’s update schedule.
