How to Upgrade to Ubuntu 23.04 from Ubuntu 22.10

Learn the step-by-step process to upgrade to Ubuntu 23.04 from Ubuntu 22.10 and enjoy the latest features and improvements!

Suppose you’re an Ubuntu user eager to stay up-to-date with the latest features and improvements. Then, you might consider upgrading your system to the just-released Ubuntu 23.04 “Lunar Lobster” from the previous Ubuntu 22.10 “Kinetic Kudu.”

Upgrading to a new version of Ubuntu is a straightforward process, and this article will guide you through every step you need to perform. So, without further ado, let’s start and take your Ubuntu experience to the next level!

Before You Start

Before you get started, ensure your system is fully up to date to guarantee a seamless upgrade. So, open the terminal and type the following two commands:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

If any updates are available, install them and reboot the system if necessary. Next, ensure you won’t lose data if the upgrade goes wrong.

In this light, we strongly recommend a full system backup. Of course, you can always use a command like the one shown below, which will archive all of the more critical directories and their contents in a tar.gz archive.

sudo tar czf /ubuntu-kinetic-backup.tar.gz \
     --exclude=/ubuntu-kinetic-backup.tar.gz \
     --exclude=/dev \
     --exclude=/mnt \
     --exclude=/proc \
     --exclude=/sys \
     --exclude=/tmp \
     --exclude=/media \
     --exclude=/lost+found \
     /Code language: JavaScript (javascript)

Feel free to add more “–exclude=” parameters if needed. Finally, the command creates a backup of all files in “ubuntu-kinetic-backup.tar.gz” located on the root partition (/), which you should ideally transfer to another computer or drive, for example, using the SCP command.

  1. I have always admired Ubuntu’s way of upgrading from one release to another. Why can’t that be done with any other distro? After distro hopping for the past 17 years I have yet to know of a single distro that can be upgraded as seamlessly as Ubuntu.
