Just days after releasing Plasma 6.8, KDE announced Plasma 6.6.7, the first maintenance update for the desktop environment’s new Long-Term Support (LTS) series.
Now, if you’re wondering why KDE is still updating Plasma 6.6 when both 6.7 and 6.8 are already available, there’s a good reason.
In July, Plasma 6.6.6 was announced as the final planned bugfix release. However, in August, KDE, with Kubuntu Focus and Techpaladin Software, introduced the Bullet-Proof KDE Initiative, extending Plasma 6.6’s maintenance to three years.
The initiative primarily targets Kubuntu 26.04 LTS, covering not only Plasma 6.6 but also KDE Frameworks 6.24 and KDE Gear 25.12. The goal is to provide continued bug fixes and security updates for users who prefer a stable desktop environment rather than upgrading to every new Plasma release.
The 6.6.7 update includes three months of fixes and improvements, focusing on KWin, KDE’s window manager and compositor.
Several crashes related to screenshots and screen recording have been resolved, along with issues involving GPU resets, keyboard repeat behavior, and screen locking. Other fixes address Wayland surface handling, input events, and display management.
KDE’s Discover software manager also receives several fixes, including a problem when closing the application while background jobs run, and another involving resources already removed.
On the desktop side, the update fixes issues with the Kickoff application launcher, dragging files onto grouped applications in Task Manager, and layout problems with right-to-left languages.
Klipper, Plasma’s clipboard manager, now correctly preserves PNG images when restoring clipboard history. The digital clock also gets fixes for time zone label fonts and resizing when seconds are enabled.
Other improvements include fixes for sound theme previews in System Settings, incorrect Breeze splash screen settings, brightness slider behavior, and the Media Frame widget not refreshing images after file changes.
Finally, KDE has addressed issues in its desktop portal implementation, including screencasting streams not being released properly when session creation fails, as well as session cleanup when the portal frontend disappears.
