ProtonUp-Qt 2.16 Linux Gaming Utility Adds New Compatibility Tool

ProtonUp-Qt 2.16 adds proton-wineland support, fixes GE-Proton installation issues, and improves Heroic Games Launcher integration.

ProtonUp-Qt, the open-source graphical utility that makes it easier to install and update custom compatibility tools for running Windows games on Linux, has been updated to version 2.16.

One of the main changes is the addition of proton-wineland to the list of supported compatibility tools, giving users another option they can install and manage directly from the application.

The update also fixes an installation directory issue affecting GE-Proton 11-4 and newer versions, which should be especially welcome for GE-Proton users who rely on it to run Windows games through Steam.

Another fix addresses Proton-RTSP installation, resolving an issue that previously prevented the tool from being installed correctly through ProtonUp-Qt.

For Heroic Games Launcher users, ProtonUp-Qt 2.16 fixes game listing issues involving GOG and Epic Games titles, improving how the utility recognizes games managed through Heroic.

Finally, the developers changed the AppImage build process to use uv and Nix. Of course, this is mainly an internal improvement for package maintainers rather than something most users will notice when running the application.

Anyone interested in trying ProtonUp-Qt 2.16 can find the new version as an AppImage on the project’s GitHub releases page. Users can download it, mark the file as executable, and launch it without installing additional packages.

The developers recommend installing ProtonUp-Qt through Flathub, although they note that the Flatpak update typically arrives a few days after the AppImage release.
