Canonical Launches Canonical Academy to Certify Real-World Ubuntu Skills

Canonical introduces a new platform that lets professionals test and certify their Linux skills through hands-on Ubuntu exams and digital badges.

Canonical, the maker of Ubuntu, has announced the launch of Canonical Academy, a new certification platform designed to help individuals and organizations validate open-source expertise through practical, Ubuntu-based exams.

The program debuts with the SysAdmin track, consisting of four exams built around real-world tasks that Linux professionals face every day. The first available exam — Using Linux Terminal — is already open to the public, while Using Ubuntu Desktop and Using Ubuntu Server are currently in beta.

A fourth exam, still in development, will complete the SysAdmin track in the coming months. Candidates who complete the SysAdmin track will receive digital badges that verify their Linux competence and can be shared with employers or peers online.

Each Canonical Academy exam is modular and self-paced, allowing professionals to progress at their own speed while focusing on the areas most relevant to their roles. The qualifications are aligned with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, with updated versions for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS expected in September 2026.

And here’s the part worth noting — the exams aren’t free. Right now, the only one available, Using Linux Terminal, costs $100.

Every exam created by Ubuntu engineers is accompanied by a study guide based on official exam content, providing structured preparation for those new to the Ubuntu ecosystem or looking to formalize their skills.

Finally, the platform emphasizes practical, scenario-driven testing over theoretical questions. According to Canonical, the exams run entirely in cloud-based environments that replicate real Ubuntu systems, allowing candidates to perform genuine administrative tasks rather than answer abstract questions.
