Kubuntu Focus, a line of high-performance, Linux-powered laptops and desktops that come preinstalled with Kubuntu, tuned and optimized out of the box, has just rolled out the Zr GEN 1, as this model is shaping up to be the most powerful portable hardware the team’s ever delivered.
The new device packs Intel’s Core Ultra 9 275HX processor. This 24-core chip offers a measured performance gain and improved energy efficiency compared to the previous i9-14900HX, while also lowering power consumption under heavy workloads.
Graphics are handled by NVIDIA’s latest RTX 50-series GPUs, with options ranging from the RTX 5080 to the RTX 5090, the latter offering 24 GB of GDDR7 VRAM for applications that require large memory buffers, such as 3D rendering, machine learning, and complex simulations.
The workstation features an 18-inch WQXGA display with a 2560×1600 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, and a 240 Hz refresh rate. G-Sync support helps reduce screen tearing during graphics-intensive work or gaming.
Storage is built around a PCIe 5.0 primary drive capable of high transfer speeds, and users can add up to three PCIe 4.0 drives for a total capacity of up to 16 TB. Memory options scale up to 192 GB of DDR5, enough for workloads like running multiple virtual machines, handling massive datasets, or working on complex multimedia projects without hitting memory bottlenecks.
Connectivity is well-rounded, including Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2, HDMI 2.1, 2.5 GbE networking, and Wi-Fi 7. A 99 Wh battery powers the system, and an included 330 W power adapter handles charging.
As you can tell from the specs (and the price), this new device from Kubuntu Focus isn’t really built for the average Linux user. It’s designed with professionals and power users in mind—people who need a portable system that can handle heavy-duty workloads like software development, data science, 3D rendering, video editing, CAD work, or even complex simulations.
The Zr GEN 1 is available to order now through the Kubuntu Focus website, with multiple configuration options for CPU, GPU, storage, and memory, starting at $4,095.
Lol, starting at 4095$.
That’s niche of a niche. Wish them well, but it feels out of touch with most people’s reality.
