Canonical has announced that Ubuntu 19.10 “Eoan Ermine” will reach its EOL (end-of-life) on July 17, 2020. If youโre still using this version of Ubuntu, which was released last October, youโll want to make sure you upgrade before the deadline in order to keep getting new security updates.
Therefore, on July 17th, 2020, Canonical will no longer support Ubuntu 19.10 and release will no longer receive security fixes. This means that they will cease to provide software updates and security fixes for the distribution.
The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 19.10 is via Ubuntu 20.04. Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FocalUpgrades.
Ubuntu 19.10 is a regular release that arrived last year on October 17, 2019, with tons of new features such as experimental ZFS support, NVIDIA drivers in ISO, and GNOME 3.34.
Ubuntu release a new version every 6 month with normally Short term support. In every two year, Ubuntu version is released with Long Term Support (LTS) edition.
Being an interim release, 19.10 comes with a 9-month support cycle that will end in the coming weeks. Therefore, itโs highly recommended that you upgrade Ubuntu 19.10 to the newly available Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
For most people, Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) releases are best to use because they are the most stable and receive updates for at least five years.
Non-LTS versions like Ubuntu 19.10 are stable too but only receive updates for nine months and act as a sort of testing ground for new features before theyโre introduced into the next LTS release which businesses and other formal users tend to opt for. Ubuntu 20.04 continues to be actively supported with security updates and select high-impact bug fixes.
