Oracle has released VirtualBox 7.2.14 as the latest maintenance update to the open-source virtualization software, bringing initial support for the upcoming Linux kernel 7.2 alongside several fixes for Linux and Windows systems.
For Linux hosts, the release adds early compatibility with the upcoming Linux 7.2 kernel. On the guest side, it restores support for updated kernels used by RHEL 9.8 and RHEL 9.9.
Windows users also receive several improvements. VirtualBox now handles Unicode clipboard formats correctly on Windows hosts, while the installer can detect the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime through the Windows servicing infrastructure.
The update also fixes a problem that could cause Windows 11 virtual machines to encounter a bug check and reboot while Secure Boot DBX entries were being updated through UEFI.
When Windows Hyper-V is used as the virtualization engine, VirtualBox now avoids querying or modifying the XCR0 register on processors that do not support the XSAVE feature.
Finally, Oracle simplified the build requirements for the legacy BIOS component. NASM 2.16 or newer can now be used throughout the entire build process.
