Valve has released Proton 10.0, a specialized version of Wine designed and tuned for gaming that allows you to play Windows titles on Linux through Steam, delivering one of the most substantial compatibility updates in recent months.
The update introduces a large batch of newly playable titles, expanding Proton’s coverage across various genres. Highlights include Mary Skelter: Nightmares, Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force, Far Horizon, The Crew Motorfest, Viking Rise: Valhalla, Starlight Re: Volver, Ninja Reflex: Steamworks Edition, Arken Age, and The Riftbreaker: Multiplayer Playtest.
Classic and remastered games also benefit, with Grim Fandango Remastered and Act of War: Direct Action now working on AMD and Intel GPUs.
Additionally, Proton 10.0 includes a comprehensive list of targeted fixes that address crashes, missing audio, broken video playback, and gameplay-blocking bugs. Several high-profile titles stand out:
- Resident Evil Village now plays videos without freezing after cutscenes.
- Agony UNRATED receives mitigations for OpenSSL-related issues on newer Intel CPUs.
- The Quarry is now playable on OLED Steam Deck models.
- Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron has audio restored in its intro video.
- Hunt: Showdown 1896 keybindings work again when using the Programmer Dvorak layout.
- METAL GEAR SOLID V sees a fix for crackling cutscene audio on Steam Deck.
- Diablo 4 regains proper screen-reader functionality with Proton Voice Files installed.
The update also addresses compatibility issues affecting major online titles. For example, The Finals no longer kicks players after a game update, and Counter-Strike resolves rare crashes when connecting to matches.
A notable portion of this release focuses on the Steam Deck. Besides game-specific fixes, Proton 10.0 resolves problems with Sony controllers in God of War: Ragnarok, stabilizes intro videos in Resident Evil titles, and corrects issues affecting OLED models.
VR performance sees meaningful upgrades, particularly in VRChat. Users should notice fewer freezes, improved seeking, better performance, and more reliable video playback thanks to enhanced AVPro player compatibility. Additional VR titles, such as Alien: Rogue Incursion, regain full playability.
Beyond headline titles, Proton 10.0 addresses a wide variety of long-standing quirks:
- Short freezes every five minutes in Deadlock are resolved.
- Menu dropdowns in Doom Eternal behave correctly again.
- Crysis 3 no longer gets stuck on an outdated EA login page.
- Age of Empires III restores its previously broken CD key entry field.
- Black Squad regains the ability to select working languages in its launcher.
- Sea Power once again plays in the background.
Several classic titles—including Alone in the Dark (2008), Prototype 2, and Hard Truck Apocalypse—now run properly on CPUs with high core counts, fixing issues that appeared on modern systems.
Valve also resolved multiple regressions introduced with earlier 10.x builds. Mouse input problems are fixed in Quake IV and DOOM 3, Marvin’s Mittens launches correctly again, and video playback issues in Resident Evil 7 and Crashlands 2 are resolved. Stability has been restored for titles like Ride 2, Malody V, and Resident Evil Village after cutscenes.
Last but not least, the release rounds out with updates to several core translation layers, improving Vulkan translation stability, Direct3D 12 compatibility, and performance on a wide range of GPUs.
