Mozilla has released Thunderbird 149, a new update for its desktop email client. The release introduces two user-facing additions. First, users can now export selected address book entries, making it easier to move contacts between systems or back them up.
Second, starred messages in Microsoft Exchange Web Services accounts now persist across devices, addressing inconsistencies when accessing the same mailbox from multiple clients.
Another change affects how address books are created. New address books are now managed through the Account Hub, consolidating setup and configuration into a single location.

On the bug fixes side, several issues in the compose window and message handling have been resolved, including problems with “Replace All” not updating plain text in real time, cancelled attachment reminders not returning focus to the message body, and failures when importing mail threads that could lead to crashes.
Additionally, text encoding repair could previously duplicate recipients and attachments, which has now been corrected.
Multiple fixes target account handling and synchronization. EWS messages that failed to sync in certain scenarios have been addressed, along with an issue preventing messages from being saved to external files from EWS accounts. POP3 connections that were refused are now properly reported, and “After Sending” filters have been fixed.
Moreover, Thunderbird now correctly displays reasons for revoked certificates. Issues affecting OpenPGP-signed messages and encrypted Gmail messages using client-side encryption with S/MIME wrapping have been resolved. Generating and saving S/MIME certificate signing requests has also been fixed.
Calendar functionality saw corrections as well. Publishing a calendar no longer results in an empty dialog, dismissed Gmail calendar reminders now behave correctly, and exporting local calendars as HTML works as expected.
Finally, several UI and usability issues have also been addressed. Link colors in dark themes have been improved for readability, the folder tree no longer shows incorrect “new messages” indicators, and screen readers now correctly announce previously unlabeled controls.
Additional fixes prevent unintended deletion of the Trash folder without confirmation and eliminate duplicate unified folders during renaming.
For more information, see the announcement. Thunderbird 149 is available for direct download on Windows 10 and newer, macOS 10.15 and later, and Linux systems from thunderbird.net.
